.... since this I bought a small vacuum press / mug oven from coralgraph. I am now getting results I only dreamed of on full coverage mugs.

I'm even getting positive reviews from German buyers on Amazon :)

2 of the 3 i bought are great. 1 went haywire and I have since had a replacement for that one. Super quick and easy for mugs that ARE NOT full coverage.

You will need a digital laser thermometer as they can be wildly inaccurate. One I set to 150C was actually at 205C, browning was an issue. You should have a thermometer anyway!
Laser thermometers are also very innacurate for measuring a MUG press (or any press) as you really need to know the temperature whilst its CLOSED ON A MUG, the only way is a wire sensor thermometer then you can close the press on a mug with the sensor inbetween. I have tested a few thermometers and have seen as much as 20degrees C difference from laser to more accurate wire sensor.

True but most laser thermometers (we have a RayTemp8) come with a type K thermocouple socket enabling probes to be used as well. So good for checking mug press and how hot your coffee is before you drink it.
