Yeah, our ink costs are about a 10th of the cost per ml compared to Sawgrass consumer inks.

The saving on ink cost is quite substantial even if you go wide format and still use Sawgrass inks. The licensed inks are cheaper again. So you can, buy a new wide format printer, run it with Sawgrass support for 12 months whilst saving money, then decide after that if you want to progress from there.

Or Epson make wide format printers specific for sublimation, with their own brand of sublimation inks and paper - all made to work together, so you can buy everything from one manufacturer and be covered by their warranty and support.

Do you know their model numbers? If so, I'll look them up.

First, sorry to ask just a noob question... but hey we all have to start somewhere right?! :-)

Anyway...

I'm considering getting into sublimation printing as it really fits well with my current skill set.

However I've been looking at the prices of finished mugs selling on ebay for around £4.95 inc shipping.
Am I missing something here? Below is my guess at the absolute cheapest I could product a mug (please feel free to correct me).. where is the margin?
Or are they just pumping them out at such a volume they are happy with pence profit.

Again, sorry for such an odd question - and I expect many comments to come back about using cheep supplies etc, however I'm just curious to how they are doing it.

Many thanks
Jason.
Surely it depends on the seller and how big they are, whether they sublimate the mugs themselves or they buy them in already done. Also whether they use a franking services to post as the saving can be a good % also couriers can be lots cheapers ( inpost less then £2) also what fee discounts the seller has. Also if the mugs are already printed they might not be great sellers so the seller want rid.

But Id say for a small to medium seller

Finished Mug £1.00

Ebay 41p

Paypal 37p

Packing 40p (Poly box and then postal cardboard box)

postage £2.50 ( but you could get it cheaper)

Hi Bazza. This question comes up quite often and the conclusion is that they are happy only making pence profit. Thus ourselves, and probably lots of others, don't bother using eBay, Etsy or NOTH as a revenue stream. One-off mugs on these platforms just do not justify the time spent on mug sublimation. Bulk producing mugs such as corporate mugs is the better way to go. Also, white mugs do differ a huge amount in terms of reliability and final appearance. Although you might want to use a cheap mug to compete on price, you may go through more than one mug in order to get past your quality control. The best mugs (as told by others as well) come from BMS and are called European mugs although produced in the USA. Cheaper mugs come from China and do not compare to the ones from BMS if that helps. Olly

I very much doubt that BMS' mugs are made in USA - The Rich Nearly coating was originally made in the USA, although now is produced by other manufacturers around the world under license. BMS' site says the mugs are "not made in China" - so they are most likely made in Thailand ... but am sure Martin or Scott will be along to clarify.
