Done some more digging on this and decided to stay with PlusNet but changing to an unlimited plan. I found out that the BT unlimited plan, whilst totally unlimited in data etc. isn't quite what it seems. They employ traffic management and slow the connection down between 5pm and midnight. PlusNet also do this on their regular plans but not on unlimited. PlusNet dropped their price close to BT but not just as an introductory offer

Free router etc.

I asked about this on the phone and they said now with unlimited they dont slow it down.
and this is from bt website
Totally Unlimited Broadband
Our unlimited packages are now totally unlimited, which means you can download as much as you like and we won't slow you down. Unlike some of our competitors
Mine changed this week and havnt as yet noticed any change in speed, will let you know if i do though.

Very interesting. BT have told me just this week that speeds are indeed throttled

During the first couple of calls they said, truly unlimited, no restrictions etc. but I did get one adviser to admit this issue. Either way, they've lost my business (sure they'll cry over that, not!) and hopefully my PlusNet connection will be even better.

Justin - i was gonna go with plusnet only because of the wee fat guy that does the advert lol - every time i see him dancing it cracks me up

catchy wee add it is - plusnet, we'll do you proud
na, sticking with sky !
i was with bt many yrs ago - speed started out fine for first 3mths, then it got worse. I phoned on many occasion to complain but was always fobbed off with some coloured person who was reading from a dam script - "have you checked your cables mr john" - "have you switched the router on/off again", you all know where i,m coming from - total waste of my time.
ANYHOO - i wanted out after 10mths of hellish speeds. Oh yeh, you can get out mr john, but you will have to PAY the rest of your contract with bt to get out. At the time it was something like £180 or there about.
I was furious but after i calmed down, YES people, i can talk calm, HONEST !, i phoned em back and payed the money and went to sky. NEVER, EVER will i go back to BT -NEVER ! Rubbish B/B and i HATE TALKING to some idiot who can ONLY read from a script....arghhh.

Difficult to find out the truth from BT. I spoke to them today and they said THEY DO traffic management and throttle speeds on unlimited contracts

One hand tell you one thing.......

Would they be able to state on their site that they dont slow you down, but then do?
I wonder if it depends on what speed you can get anyway, as to if they did slow you down, i can only get max of 8gb where i am, and have not noticed a difference and have been doing regular speed checks the last few days with very little fluctuation, but early days.

Surely not. I do find these sites deliberately confusing though. Plus net claim certain prices but it depends on your location as to whether you get those prices. They state from £4.99 at the moment, based on the phone number and postcode but as you progress it starts to tell you different
