I do the same as JSR 16.99 for empty cartridges with 400ml of ink, then 9.99 for refills when required on ebay for Epson 4 colour.

I didn't get on with refills in my Epsons because of the thimble-size cartridges. That's why I switched to Brother.

As mentioned before, anything that takes the LC1100/980 cartridges (they do them for the LC985 cartridges now, too). I'm not limited to one printer.

You can either use giant-size cartridges that take 100ml/80ml (the black is bigger than the colours) with the cartridges sticking out of the printer, or smaller ones that take ~30ml that let you shut the cartridge door. The smaller type are available to replace LC1000/970 cartridges, too. Many of Brother's printers take the same cartridge, so you just need to match your cartridge to your printer.

I got my cartridges from http://www.printercartridges.net/printe ... ts_id=1334 and ink from http://www.printercartridges.net/printe ... cts_id=780 but they're available from many places, and ebay.

Prices are up a couple of quid since I bought them, but it has been over a year since I bought mine.

Unlike other makes of printers, there are no chips on the cartridges - so they don't need to keep being reset after you've printed a tiny amount.

That photo shows my DCP-195C, but I'm using an MFC-5890CN for daily printing/office use because it's A3. I also have an MFC-295CN (A4) which I got off ebay for £22 (refurb'd). My Epsons and lasers don't get much of a look in these days.

Did you check out refilltoner.com to see if you can get cheaper refills for whichever colour laser you go for? They give you all the instructions in the starter pack, and if it involves melting holes in the toner cartridge, you get the device to do that too.

I know this is really only a gimmick but all Brother inkjet printers have scanners on top, too, which can be used without the computer running. Many of them also have auto-document feeders on them, making it easier to scan several sheets at once.

If you have a mobile device (iPhone, Android), check their website for the Brother iPrint&Scan app. This allows you to print and scan using your mobile device via your network. It supports most of their network-capable printers (but not all of the cheapest ones).

Okay, now for the negative - if you're printing in high quality, they can be pretty slow (certainly when compared to a laser). Oh, and the entry-level models have quite small paper trays which may not compare favorably with a good laser. I accept all of this for the near zero running costs (it's why I have three of the things here now), but they may be deal-breakers for you.

Used to be the 195, but now it's the 295. It will be the 5890 if I need to do more A3 work than my Epsons can deal with without fuss. It doesn't really matter which one at the end of the day, so long as you have a profile.

I'm with Jonathan as I love the Brother I use for my everyday printing. I use the smaller refill cartridges in mine so, I can shut that door. The magenta cartridge did start to leak slightly so just bought some new ones off Ebay from someone in Hong Kong for under £10 including P&P. They only took just a week to get here & they are very good quality.

Now for an idea on savings. If I had to buy new genuine Brother cartridges 4 would cost me around £56 but with these refillable cartridges if say I used something like JR Inkjet refill ink I could reifll the cartridges 3 times for just under £10 which is a saving of £112.

When I have to buy a new printer for my dye sub work well I'll also be going the Brother route too with one of Paul's custom profiles. :biggrin:
