Thanks Matt, but I think your making it more complicated. I've already had my answer - I was replying to Ian regarding why you don't get a petrol receipt.

Because of the additional fuel duty most garages and other fuel suppliers have operated electronic reporting systems for at least 25 years. Likewise most small shops can now utilise bar code scanners and electronic reporting systems.
I only know of ONE fuel supplier working manually - And he's a bloke in a big shed making biodiesel out of chip fat! As Bio is the only thing he sells you get a hand-written page out a duplicate book off him with a rubber stamp showing his VAT number...
Neither he nor his customers (mostly tradesmen and taxis) seem to have had a problem with the VAT or tax man???
These electronic systems make apportionment schemes unnecessary as they allow for very accurate reporting. I have several family members and many friends who run retail operations and know of none that operate any of these special schemes... Most people are on cash accounting as normal.
