Must be the way they are handled by DPD.

Hi guys, I believe the AAA mugs are just hand graded mugs from the original batch. In other words someone has to visually grade each one by going through the boxes taking out each mug and look for anything that might not make it passable as a AAA. Obviously this would carry a labour time cost hence the mugs costing a few quid more. This means you could buy a box of mugs and in reality have a box of AAA mugs because they are all of a high standard. I have bought many boxes of these mugs and found them fantastic, so it really depends on your personal choice of perfection, as for me I only drink my tea out of a bone china cup:biggrin:

The labour time/cost will be equal for a perfect and seconds mug - as each needs to be sorted... in theory, if they didn't sort the mugs and just sold them all as is, the cost of an unsorted mug would be cheaper than the seconds currently are.

The A grade is what they use themselves for printing. If they add a couple of extra A's on the title they can charge more.

I've often wondered about this myself.

I order LW AAA 11oz Durham mugs and the quality is great, but not always 'flawless.' When I open a box of these I see that all mugs in the box are upside-down with the exception of a single mug in the corner of the top layer. This suggests to me that only one mug per box is checked, or is this just a further check before sealing the box?

I've wondered how much is also to do with the quality of the base mugs before they are coated.
