Help! Pinging mugs :-(
Re: Help! Pinging mugs :-(
How tight have you got the press?
When you close the press, is it clamping close or touching the handle - some presses and mugs don't work together too well, especially if the handle is a little wonky, which seems quite common.
Do you get pinging/cracking on mugs you haven't fan cooled?

i would ditch the dunking, and use a fan, and make sure that the mugs are not coming out of a cold garage and as pisquee says, check you are not clamping too hard -

NOT been through mug press...... would point to mug problem not press.Katy W;78288 wrote:Thanks Bms. The latest four I tested hadn't been through the mug press but two still pinged with hot water so I'm thinking I might have a faulty batch. I have another 3 boxes of 36 so I'll test some from each box, with and without pressing.
I have reduced the temperature as you suggested and also loosened the pressure but then I got a faded edge, aargh! It must have been just tight enough before.
Apart from that, the prints look great!

We are having problems too - for well over a year we have been producing mugs using BMS's 11oz mugs - they were out of stock for a while but finally got new stock in October - lots of pinging and lots of rejects - never had that before - all our settings remain the same but fed up losing so many - it's as if the mugs are uneven or something. It is amazing how we had such a great operation with very few rejects and now it's driving me made because I hate throwing mugs out, 2 out of 10!

I am a newbie, bought a 3350n ricoh printer ,a press and away I went. actually never heat or pre heat anything. I work in a cold conservatory from home so the mugs are very cold to start with, machine set to 190 for 3 mins works a treat for me, just bought a 6oz Durham sleeve to do my first china mugs, again same state of play and time worked brilliant

Re: Help! Pinging mugs :-(
Everything seems to point to a faulty batch of mugs. However what I would do is purchase a few from another supplier and test those just to make sure. I would recommend Listawood as their mugs are on par with BMS's. Once you have received and tested those mugs then you will be in a better position to determine if its the process or the physical mug.
If it is faulty mugs then I am sure BMS will replace them for you as they have an excellent reputation.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I had four boxes of mugs and have been using some from each box and so far all the ones that have cracked came out of the same box. Yes that's right Janners they cracked with hot water even if I hadn't pressed them first so it must have just been a faulty batch.

Re: Help! Pinging mugs :-(
i had my first pinging mug the other day i thought i would explain how it came about
i made mug as normal, press, remove wrap etc, but as i was in a rush to get them over to the customer i cooled them down in cold water straight from a tap ( i normally just allow to cool by window)
i done this with 2 mugs, then packaged for delivery
took a trip over to customer and had a chat and a cup of tea
his handle from the colour changing mug fell off right in front of my eyes (yes i didnt know where to put my face)
so i explained to him how it could have happened and how i rushed them he was fine
i also done his wife a nice bone china mug (she wasnt home when i dropped mugs off)
i got mail 3 hours later saying his wifes mug pinged as she poured hot water in and now has a hairline crack (oooops!!!) ha ha
this was the other day, i am happy to say issue is solved and they are both happy customers now
