I think it's a case of whoever is first out of traps with a new popular design, can charge that bit extra - before everyone else copies it! Or you have a unique design that can't easily be copied.
Joe Punter who wants a "Happy Birthday You Old Git" mug is going to buy the cheapest he can. But someone who want's a proper gift/service doesn't mind paying that bit extra, and will remember you for next time.
