Im sure on .com you can opt out but certainly not on .co.uk and a lot of others. But if your legit why opt out you can use your trading name and address

Maybe you just won't everybody knowing your business, I can think of 3 good reason why it some people would opt out. Even on this site we don't put all our identity's or where we live in full. not everybody puts there web address on here. Some people like more privacy than others.

If your on the web in any shape or form your privacy can so easilly be invaded. If you have a website why on earth would you want it not easilly findable. scratches head

I buy lots and design a fair chunk of websites for people and small companies and one of the first things I ask is - do you want to opt out of WHOIS and well over two thirds say yes, because they are small companies that have their company's registered at home so why would they want someone finding out their home addresses?

The 'who is' side of things is a little different to the SEO of a website.

In the past I created websites for a few people, some of them being security related so I made sure that my 'who is' details were not available but also made sure that they had good SEO to be found as a website. I also didn't want any of my 'who is' information displayed as I would purchase domain names to work on websites when time permitted - if someone wanted to see what I had bought to 'copy' my ideas then using the 'who is' would have been a perfect way.

or have I got this all wrong?

Nothing wrong with a parked domain name, but if live im sure its a requirement on a lot of TLD's to have the whois uptodate.........

so basically it is a lot of tosh and you can call yourself an "individual" and opt out even tho you are trading and selling stuff ?:rolleyes:

thats what it looks like to me from what i can read from others on here and other forums.

Maybe the are buying domain names as it similar to the ones that the already have. I have had a competitor buy a similar name to mine, just because we sell the same things, my bad should have thought of it first, they might want to stop some one using it, to me that makes sense.

It's like pulling out of directory enquiries. A lot of people do it for a lot of different reasons. Some because they dont want everyone knowing their business (literally in some cases), some do it to hide something more, some people just do it out of pure suspicion that they are "leaving a trail". I've had ex bosses who have been ultra paranoid about leaving a personal trail - so no whois, no facebook, no twitter, nothing....

Mind you I had an ex boss who wanted total privacy, so no WHOIS, was paranoid about not using personal or company credit cards on the internet, yet was happy to have their own facebook and linkedin accounts, so go fig.

If you are online, you're probably going to be found by someone who is semi determined.
