Might be stating the obvious but you have changed your resolution in Windows haven't you?

change the screen resolution in windows to 1400 x 900, or 1680 x 1050, or if they are not available go through all the resolutions until you find one that looks right, may take 10 mins or so...but will be worth it

Some of the older graphics cards, especially in XP dont support widescreen

neilb and DS designs - i love you both, it seems that the download, which should have re-set the resolution had not done so, i have set it on max which is 1600 x 900 and everything is lovely - thank you so much
