The ink is definitely different. Inks in Epson/ Canon printers is very watery (I'm talking about the genuine inks, not sublimation inks). The ink inside the Ricoh cartridges is thicker. I'd compare the difference a bit like comparing wine 'legs' in a glass when you swill it around (Epson & Canon inks) and single cream in the same wine glass. A very slight change can result in no print at all! Best test is to open a Ricoh cartridge and look at the ink yourself - I've plenty of these kicking around the warehouse...
