Actually, I believe Epson have been tested before and although they don't like you using non-OEM ink, they'll only cause a fuss about it if it was the ink that caused the problem. If it's something else that caused the problem, they tend to honour the warranty.
Whether it's worth spending money getting a cheap entry-level printer fixed, though, is open to question.
