You can actually get your screen calibrated to get pantones whilst viewing it. Probably expensive. There is also an iPhone app but I reckon that can't be very good.
As you describe above on what your manufacturer said is what we tell our customers who are particular about colours. A pantone reference helps give a true indication of what you want.
