Personally, I never use Illustrator. I simply fill my image foreground with black and fill the background with white then open it it in the excellent VectorMagic software (which is FREE to use online). I then Save the resulting vector outline to use as a cutting line in SCAL. I've printed and cut thousands of magnetic invitations and other projects using this method.
