I don't find that that method preheats the mug enough.

it always works for me but my print usually finishes 5mm before bottom of mug, just have the heat sink near the handle to worry about but i 've moved my design inwards to help with this. I find the heatsink near the handles effect my blue prints (they get pink near the edges) but red seems fine.
