I agree, it takes a bit of practice, but once you have mastered it it wont take long.
If the image has a good contrast between the logo and the background then tracing is certainly the best way to do it. But more often than not the background merges with the logo and you will have to outline it the way I described.
If the image is problematic you can try using the tone controls ( Effects-Adjust-Tonecurve and change it from curve to straight). This will darken the darker bits and lighten the lighter bits of the image. It makes it easier to autotrace it.
But dont forget to save the origional image first :-)
You can also bring the image into Corel Paint and use the mask brush tool to make the background transparent.
