I would definitely take a punt - no question.. As has been suggested, this (to a degree) has to be a 'Sales' ploy..
They can't lose, I imagine this:

You, "Hello SG, My colours are wrong"

SG, "Check expiry date"

You, "They are out of date - what now?"

SG, "Buy new ones"

.. you buy new ones but:

You, "Same Issue" (but said in a more polite and articulate way of course, not 'blunt' like that).

SG, "Well then in that case Sir/Madam, you will need to buy a new package from one of our registered re-sellers".

A few years ago I found a tin of Tuna which was about 8 years out of date, I had a Dog at the time and I considered giving it to her but thought better of it - I did end up eating it myself though just to prove a point.. I had flatulence for a few hours the next day (in the night mostly) - I still remember the odor of that to this day, like melted plastic mainly ! But I am still here to tell the tale (The Dog died years later of old age - I had imported her from Greece so in any case a tin of slightly old Tuna would not have bothered her in the slightest.)

One of the theories raised over on T-Shirt forums when there were issues with the original Ricoh models that Sawgrass was using (dying when using Sawgrass inks), was that the printers were dying due to use of out of date inks, although I can't remember if this came from Sawgrass, Conde, or just general users of the forum, and if it came from Sawgass or their dealers (who seemed as much in the dark at the time as regular users) whether it was just a tectic to get more sales of ink or systems is hard to know. Certainyl on that forum, it didn't do much for any mistrust already shown to Sawgrass.

(other theories discussed were that something faulty in the chips on the carts Sawgrass were using was causing problems, and problems with the ink itself breaking the printer. All the faults discussed seemed to point to motherboard failure of the printers, but no conclusive conclusion was come as to the actual cause, or whether failures with Sawgrass inks were higher than that of printers with the proper Ricoh inks in.)

New printer is here, inks are in and running fine. Print is actually slightly better than my A3...figure that? Obviously early days and won't know for a while if there's any adverse effect but so far so good :-)
