Re: Cutter Help

Post by bespokevans »

Hi all,

Please help me decide on a cutter.

my options are:

Old Roland Camm1 cx24
One of the chinese cutters? any preferred ones ?
Silhouette cameo

My budget is is £200-£500

The work I am going to be doing is for personal use so speed or noise is not an issue for me. Neither is an optical eye essential.

Ideally a 600mm cutter but I could get away with cameo's 300mm maximum cut, although I have read it has issues with tracking over a longer length which could be a problem for me.

If anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Stuart

Cx24 is a great machine, if you can find one. Silhouette is a very capable machine and never fails to surprise me, saved my bacon a few times recently when my Chinese machine went belly up.

I was set on the Roland this week and had agreed a price on ebay....emailed me a few hours later to say the mainboard had blown ! This has put me off. How do you find the cameo at max width for long lengths ?

I've cut at full width on my cameo for designs over 2 metres long without any issues, you just need to make sure that the vinyl is straight and its fed properly! Just got a new cutter but thinking of hanging onto the Cameo in case of emergency like Justin haha!

That's the first CX24 I've (personally) ever heard of going wrong :-( I wonder if they got offered a better price? Quite possible.

I get on fine with the Cameo but have to use the carrier sheet when cutting my garment vinyl or it slips. Even the software you get with it is very good. It's a tiny machine so minimum footprint, bit noisy and slow but you can forgive that. Cut quality is superb.

Very possible....Ive heard that without carrier vinyl is rather unstable...I need to do a 300mm x 3000mm cut

I've never done much more than A3 in size, I tend to split the design where I can. I'm looking at getting longer carrier sheets for bigger jobs, I don't see any issues if you use those.

If you are going to be making 3m designs then I might not go with the cameo cause it is not really built for that purpose. I know in the spec it can cut up to 5m I think but that doesn't mean you should lol. It might be worth looking for a decent 2nd hand as a few pop up on ebay within the budget you stated.
