Self adhesive PP film

Hi all,
What exactly it PP film?
What is it used for.
I have been told that it is a wide format roll that one can print onto and then once printed it is peeled back and added to whatever one likes.
That sounds a bit too good to be true to me?
It is , I am told weather proof and you can print on it with normal ink.
So it is a bit like a transparent printable sticky back plastic that comes in rolls and can be printed with inkjet inks on a wide format printer.
I am to say the least dubious.
Opinions and advice please.
