E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
Re: E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
All has gone quite well. The new book (Show me guides- OpenCart 1.5 User Manual) arrived and has been really good at explaining in simple terms how to set up "opencart". In essence you could be up and running with a few items in the shop in about 30 minutes.
I appear to have stumped myself abit though. In the default home page layout there is a "samsung Galaxy" carousel banner, under that is a featured product list, and under that is a nice row of manufactures logos.
Somehow I have deleted / turned these off. No problem as such, as I want to put in a "welcome" statement and "Featured Products". The problem is I have no idea what I did to turn them off (it wasn't intentional), and thus no idea of how to turn them on. All appears simple in the guide, I follow it, but no result.
2 days of trying and I am beaten. I guess I am missing something simple. Any users of "Opencart" got any pearls of wisdom?

Have you been tinkering around in the module section of opencart by any chance ?
you can disable the standard Carousel with the manufactures logo in there, if i remember right !.
i was like you janners, hadnt a clue about opencart - google / youtube - some of the guys on here and lots of patience, you will get there.
Now i,m more than confidant working around opencart - and the main thing is - BACK UP - BACK UP - BACK UP !....ALWAYS !
I learned the hard way - ask steve lol
if you also look and join, then search in the opencart forums, you will get more help janners - altho, there are a tad slow in getting back to your posts.
also, google your question and at the end of it put opencart !
it will surprise you what comes back
Re: E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
I have just sent a cry for help to Steve. I am doing the "try all options" before calling for help, as it helps me learn.
Ohhh how right you are, I have been tinkering in the module section, and I have indeed disabled the Standard Carousel.
The problem is getting my intended welcome text onto the front page. I have been methodical but to no avail.
Here is the step by step process I have followed to get my welcome text on the fron page.
If I use the "welcome" note as an example of what I have done to try and create it
I have gone to the "Extensions" menu, then "Modules", then down to "Welcome", then "Edit".
I have then typed in the text I want for the "welcome"
Set layout to "Home"
Position "Content top"
Status "Enabled"
Sort Order "1"
Clicked "save"
No success!

Re: E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
Ahh Steve to the rescue.
It appears "I wasn't as green as I was cabbage looking". In other words I was doing it right, but somehow there was a corruption in the software, and hence it wouldn't play.
All sorted and I can continue learning.

Re: E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
A good day today sorting out the "Catagories" and "Sub-Catagories", changing the "Home Page" message etc.
It's fair to say that "Opencart" is quite easy to set up. I am a exceelnt example of somebody who just gets annoyed with computers. Give me mechanical items and I am away, but computers.........hmmmm.
So we have progress.

Re: E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
Contact us
Hmm I cannot get this to work in "Opencart".
If a customer clicks on the "contact us" page it opens just fine, they fill in thier details and the message, enter the code, and send. The page they see says the email has been sent. However I receive nothing.
If a customer sends an order, that works and I receive the notification in my email.
I have been reading the "opencart forum" for the last few hours, it would appear that this is a common issue, and the replies appear to go in circles with no answer.
Has anybody here using "Opencart" had the same issue, and if so how did you resolve it?

Re: E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
no but double check ur email in system settings and that the email isn't blocking or treating it as spam
Re: E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
Checked the spam filter, not there, and not being blocked.
The odd thing is if an order is placed I get the email notification. If the "contact us" page is used I don't.
It is driving me nuts.

Re: E shop from scratch knowing nothing!
Courtesy of our man who can "Steve" we are a bit further forward.
The emails still don't get to my AOL address even though I have checked all Spam filters, and all things that may be blocked. However I can access and reply to them all in CPanel.
So we have established that "opencart" is doing its bit, the server appears to be doing its bit, what happens with it geting to my AOL address is anybodies guess.
Steve switched the email address to his own and it works fine, put it back to my AOL address, and ....... nothing.
The odd thing is that and order gets through, a "contact us" enquiry does not.
Strange.
