Re: Totally ****** off with my host
How come your having so many problems, I don't understand?
On my websites (all with 123-reg) I just upload with filezilla and its there, instant - if its not I refresh and it goes to the correct page/version straight away.

On my PC, I'm seeing the one with the girl in the corner. On my mobile phone, I'm seeing the OpenCart installation ("Step 1 - License"). My iPad shows the OpenCart one. Don't see any "maintenance mode" going on.bigj2552;41645 wrote:guys.....here is my new store in maintenance mode.....
can you guys on here please report back and tell me what site you all see at -
www.kustomdesign.co.uk
is it the one with the girl at top right hand corner and opening soon ?
or
is it maintenace mode one with red/white/black colours....
looking for feedback for the guys on here....please
Network tools shows the IP address of the site as 184.171.251.80, while my PC is pulling up the site from IP address 94.136.40.90.
Looks to me like there's some kind of DNS propagation/cache issue going on here. It'll likely sort itself out eventually.
I'm no expert on this but what's probably happening is that 123reg either has a very high TTL (which is how long between checks DNS servers will take) or, and this is more likely, some DNS servers are unable to reach 123reg's primary nameserver and so are using their secondary nameserver (which, in turn, can't reach the primary nameserver) - so any DNS server that's using their secondary nameservers will still be calling up the old server IP. This latter case could explain why some DNS servers are updated already while others are not.
Re: Totally ****** off with my host
everyone is on dif internet providers
some the swap is instant others it can take up to 48hrs
by 48hrs everyone should of swapped over however they can still pick up the cached version as google etc stores the site in their history
but if you clear ur cache and cookies it will resolve this
mobile providers seem to be the quickest since i've had mobile internet any swap is done near enough instantly, which is handy for me but annoying for the person who's site it is
esp when i say haha i can see it but you can't lol
the internet is a funny thing and a pain in the bum but patience is a virtue

Re: Totally ****** off with my host
This is true. Most often you'll find the domains have 24hours TTL and if your ISP's DNS cache also has a delay in lookup, it can take twice that for them to update. The answer is to use different DNS than the lazy ones provided by your ISP (either that or be patient for 48 hours).smitch6;41693 wrote:everyone is on dif internet providers

Personally, when I know I'm due to change servers, I set my TTLs to 5 minutes and then wait a day before doing the move. That gives all the ISPs DNS servers the chance to update their records and know that they need to look them up every 5 minutes. Once that is set, the change to a new server is pretty much unnoticeable because it shouldn't take any DNS server longer than 5 minutes to update its records. I was moving some of my sites from one server to another this afternoon. Admittedly both servers were housed at the same provider, but the DNS records were updated within seconds - job done with no hassle.
Most nameservers are set by default to 24 hours because setting them to something quick (like 5 minutes) can put too much stress on them for no good reason (most people aren't moving domains around, so why have a low TTL?). Most providers have secondary nameservers which can have their "expires" set up to 4 weeks - so if the primary nameserver is down, then the ISP's DNS server will query the secondary one which also can't contact the primary and so will give the only data it has (which could be 4 weeks out of date).
Complicated business, but it's still better than using IP addresses instead of URLs..!

"cough".....er...that was when i tryed to "upgrade" opencart to 1.5.2....aye, upgraded alright.....wiped the dam site clean i did .....absolutely fuming i was.......Lost the lot...pics / settings / wording ..the lot !JSR;41691 wrote:On my PC, I'm seeing the one with the girl in the corner. Steve was out on business, so i couldnt get him to try and help sort it ....hence the reason for the install page lol....
but...
on the bright side.....
i have to start right from scratch again, and it has made me re-evaluate what products i want to sell & how to sell them....
Getting more involved this time around with the design part of the store....do things better than i did before...also doing a little bit more reseach on whats available for opencart module wise,
so yes, its a bloody nightmare when 1 wks work goes into thin air in 2 mins but, i have learned from this in many ways..
main way - BACK UP - BACK UP -BACK UP !..
Gonna see steve when i,m finished whats the best way to back up the whole dam store - everything..must be a way to do it ?
learn this lesson people....back up every dam thing that has to do with computers..worth it in long run
and again....massive thanks to steve for all his help...even tho it was saturday..and he was totally knackered - the guy came through for me..again
Re: Totally ****** off with my host
Steve might have a backup from the previous day. I set my servers to automatically backup all sites and all databases on a nightly basis, just in case the worst happens. Steve might do the same.

i asked him that m8....er...he says he couldnt restore my site since i overwrote the files with the new versionJSR;41707 wrote:Steve might have a backup from the previous day. and yeh....i though servers usually get backed up to...but hey.....
its done me a favour, like i said in my previous post.
Gave me a whole new outlook on what i want to do with this store
Have had a look into running my own server......and it means building another pc purposely for it......thats the easy bit, setting the thing up is the hardest..
but for now..i got enough on my plate
Re: Totally ****** off with my host
Most hosts will charge extra for automated backups (it can require as much as three times the disk space as you already pay for, and they need to pay for it somehow), but you may have the option to backup your site and databases through your control panel.bigj2552;41709 wrote:i asked him that m8....er...he says he couldnt restore my site since i overwrote the files with the new version.....

I don't run a home server, but a VPS (like a real server, only not so expensive) to host several sites. As I don't run it as a commercial venture, I have it do backups as a matter of course. But if you're paying for 1GB of webspace then the backup could take up 3GB more if monthly and weekly backups are retained together with daily backups. You can see that a host needs some way of paying for that extra 3GB of space and why they don't do it as standard unless you pay extra.
An easy way to backup is to keep a copy of your site structure on your home PC and backup the database frequently. It's always best to do that anyway, in case you feel the need to move elsewhere later.
Re: Totally ****** off with my host
Incidentally, Opencart 1.5.2 is *very* new. You'd be best to stick with OpenCart 1.5.1.3 until they work out the early bugs of 1.5.2. The older 1.5.1.3 isn't exactly perfect, but at least we know the bugs! :biggrin:bigj2552;41706 wrote:"cough".....er...that was when i tryed to "upgrade" opencart to 1.5.2....aye, upgraded alright.....wiped the dam site clean i did .....absolutely fuming i was.......Lost the lot...pics / settings / wording ..the lot !
I'll be waiting at least a month, probably two, before upgrading to 1.5.2. And, when I do, I won't be upgrading a "live site" - I'll work on a copy until I'm sure it's working okay.
