Re: use by dates on inks
We only have experience with the SubliJet R for Ricoh, and have used ink before that has been 8 months out of date without problems or reduction in quality.

I also used expired Sawgrass ink and no problem. I know many people use expired ink (sublimation or not), especially with large format printers and it looks like risks are low. I think it's just a warranty measure.
Re: use by dates on inks
We have used used sublimation inks (Inktec) well past their use by dates (from memory at least 12-18 months past) as they were so cheap to buy on Ebay it seemed worth the risk! They were large format 400ml carts, so had to open them up and drain the inks from the foil bags into bottles. They worked fine technically in terms of there been no problems with the printer clogging, although the colours weren't as vibrant as we were used to compared to the in date inks, but only slight, and no customers noticed
